Βυθισμένο στην μαγευτική τοπογραφία της Τοσκάνης στην βόρεια Ιταλία, βρίσκεται η πίστα που ακούει στο όνομα Mugello. Ένα σύμβολο του θεάματος, της δύναμης και ταχύτητας που προσφέρει απλόχερα το MotoGP. Εδώ και σαράντα χρόνια η πίστα αυτή φιλοξενεί το κορυφαίο πρωτάθλημα μοτοσυκλέτας, αποτελώντας το τέλειο αμφιθέατρο για ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα σύμβολα του παγκόσμιου αθλητισμού. Αν υπήρχε ένας συγκεκριμένος αγώνας στον οποίο να άξιζε να ρίξουμε τα φώτα πάνω στον Valentino Rossi, τον χαρακτήρα τις ικανότητες του αλλά και στην λατρεία του κόσμου γύρω του, αυτός ο αγώνας είναι του Mugello.
«Σαν Ιταλός, το Mugello απλά σου χαρίζει επιπλέον δέκατα ταχύτητας στο δεξί χέρι» δήλωσε ο πολυπρωταθλητής Loris Capirossi: ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους αντιπάλους του Valentino σε αυτή την πίστα, όπου είχαν οι δυο τους την μεγάλη μάχη του 2006 που κέρδισε ο Rossi με μισό δευτερόλεπτο διαφορά. Submerged in the rippling topography of Tuscany in northern Italy the strip of asphalt that is Mugello has become symbolic of the speed, power, spectacle and allure of MotoGP. For exactly forty years the ‘autodromo’ has beckoned the pinnacle of motorcycle racing into the cauldron of off-cambered turns and has been the amphitheatre for one of the sport’s greatest icons.
If there is one race that encapsulates Valentino Rossi’s skill as an athlete and character then the levels of noise, adoration, colour and atmosphere found at Mugello could not be a better mark. The ‘fandemonia’ that follows The Doctor rages all weekend and is perhaps one of the most intoxicating experiences of the season. As we learned in 2016, his army of fans carry him through both the highs and lows of the sport.

Vale’s closest confidantes have lived through the best and worst times in the Italian hills: from the first Grand Prix win in 1996 (he finished fourth) and his maiden victory in 1997 to the memorable track invasion of the early ‘00s, the special helmet designs, the one-off liveries, the seven triumphs in a row from 2002-2008 and the only serious injury of his two decade career with the practice crash and broken leg in 2010.
