Από τις καταιγίδες στην λιακάδα και από την λάσπη στην σκόνη, ο τελευταίος αγώνας του πρωταθλήματος Rallycross World 2016 στο Ροσάριο της Αργεντινής, είχε απ΄όλα.
Μπορεί στα προκριματικά να έκλεψε την παράσταση ο Petter Solberg πετυγχαίνοντας τέσσερεις νίκες στους τέσσερεις προκριματικούς γύρους, αλλά την καρό σημαία του τελικού είδε πρώτος ο Andreas Bakkerud. Ο οδηγός της ομάδας της Monster Energy ξεκίνησε από την pole position και ήταν άπιαστος μέχρι το φινάλε του αγώνα αλλά και της φετινής σεζόν.
Ο τερματισμός αυτός έφερε στο τέλος μια σεζόν γεμάτη ρεκόρ για τον 25χρονο Νορβηγό στο τέλος της, μετά από τρεις νίκες (Νορβηγία, Σουηδία και Αργεντινή) και ακόμη τρία βάθρα (Καναδά, Γαλλία και Γερμανία) πίσω από το τιμόνι του καινούργιου Ford Focus RS RX της ομάδας Hoonigan Racing Division και της Ford Performance. Φυσικά, φεύγοντας πρώτος από την εκκίνηση, ο Bakkerud έστριψε και πρώτος στην πρώτη στροφή προσθέτοντας ακόμη ένα πολύτιμο τρόπαιο Monster Energy Super Charge στην συλλογή του. Η νίκη, μάλιστα, στην Αργεντινή τον ανέβασε και στην τρίτη θέση του πρωταθλήματος που αποτελεί την καλύτερη θέση που κατέκτησε ποτέ στην καριέρα του στα World Championship Supercars. Για τον μεγάλο αστέρα της Monster Energy και περσινό πρωταθλητή, Petter Solberg, το φινάλε της σεζόν ήταν γλυκόπικρο καθώς μπορεί να είχε τους ίδιους βαθμούς με τον Bakkerud αλλά έπρεπε να αρκεστεί στην τέταρτη θέση. Μάλιστα στον ημιτελικό, μετά από μεγάλη εμφάνιση στα προκριματικά, δέχθηκε χτύπημα από τον Timur Timerzyanov ρίχνοντας τον στην πέμπτη θέση και εκτός τελικού. Μετά το τέλος του αγώνα ο Solberg δήλωσε: «Παρόλη την αυτοπεποίθηση που είχαμε μπαίνοντας στον τελικό, και με ένα πολύ καλό αυτοκίνητο δεν καταφέραμε να κλείσουμε την χρονιά με μια νίκη. Με την βροχή να σπρώχνει στα προκριματικά την Κυριακή, τα πράγματα δυσκόλεψαν ακόμη περισσότερο. Δυστυχώς το χτύπημα στον ημιτελικό ήταν αρκετό για να μας βγάλει από την διεκδίκηση της νίκης. Αρκεί απλά να πω πως αυτός δεν είναι ο τρόπος που ήθελα να κλείσω την χρονιά».

BAKKERUD BLASTS TO VICTORY AT 2016 WORLD RX FINAL
From thunderstorms to blistering sunshine, and mud to dust; in a championship of total extremes, only an edge-of-the-seat and totally unpredictable season final would do. The 2016 FIA Rallycross World Championship wrapped in Rosario, Argentina, this weekend, in absolute awesome style. While it was Petter Solberg who stole the show in the qualifying races, with a perfect run of four wins from Q1 through to Q4, the final flag and trophy belonged to Andreas Bakkerud, who romped away from his pole position grid slot to take a dominant win.
It marked the end of a record-breaking championship for the 25 year-old Norwegian sensation, who has been on the podium for half of the 12 races this season – grabbing three wins (Norway, Sweden, Argentina) and a further three podiums (Canada, France, Germany) in his new Ford Focus RS RX run by Hoonigan Racing Division and Ford Performance.
What’s more Andreas added the #ArgentinaRX Monster Energy Super Charge Award to his collection – his fifth in Supercars – thanks to his lightning reaction at the start, and a super-fast run into turn one. Bakkerud wasn’t finished there though. The blistering performance in Argentina slingshots him into 3rd in the drivers’ championship – an all time best in his World Championship Supercar career to date.
It was a bittersweet end to the year for outgoing champion Petter Solberg though, who was forced to settle for fourth in the drivers’ standings – equal on points with Bakkerud. Despite dominating the early stages of the Argentinean event, Solberg’s weekend took a nightmare turn in semi-final one, when he, and rival Janis Baumanis, were shunted from behind by Timur Timerzyanov. The resulting impact broke the steering on his PSRX Citroen DS3, and forced Petter down to fifth in the race. To add further to the injury, the heartbreak semi result ruled him out of the grand final, placing him 7th overall, and also pushed him to fourth in the drivers’ standings.
Head Hoonigan in Charge, Ken Block, showed blistering pace in Rosario also, but, like Petter, was denied a shot in the finals. In both the torrential conditions on Saturday, and the blistering heat on Sunday, Block posted consistently high on the scoreboard – racing to sixth in Q1 and third fastest during Sunday’s morning practice session. Unfortunately during Q2, Block was pushed wide in turn three, and his 600bhp Ford Focus RS RX was left spinning up the wheels in the deep mud.
The knock-on effect placed Block in the early races of Q3 and Q4, which offered up the slowest conditions for each qualification race. Nevertheless Block remains upbeat – eyeing an intense off-season test programme, as well as promising to come back stronger in 2017.
